BITTERSWEET

...

Poppy Maby explores emotions and how colours and textures can stimulate various emotional responses in people, through mixed media. intrigued by how something can look interesting and sweet to someone and sickly to someone else, Maby plays with the idea of visual contrasts, by displaying disturbing or strange imagery adjacent to more childlike and kitsch ideas. She portrays the chaos of life and a sense of messiness to the cycle of feelings, particularly focusing on contrasts between opposite emotions. Through 'Life is Bittersweet Chaos', Maby not only presents her own personal expressions and feelings, but opens up an intriguing dialogue to the viewer and asks them to consider their own responses to the imagery presented.

WHAT WAS POPPY'S MAIN INSPIRATION FOR HER PROJECT?

Maby's main inspiration for this project was how the
same texture or image can conjure completely different emotional responses for two people, and to ask why we associate certain colours or materials with specific emotions. Additionally, she intended to further her interest in faces; playing around with expressions we make when we feel angry or excited.
WHY WAS THIS A PERSONAL PASSION OF HERS?

She felt really drawn to the mental science behind the connection between art and emotions, and wanted to experiment with this theme.
WHY DID POPPY TITLE HER PROJECT THE WAY SHE DID?

The idea behind 'Bittersweet' was to represent the core focus of the project- contrasts and conflicting feelings. How can something look both sweet and sickly? why might an image be interpreted as both unnerving and beautiful? And ultimately, how do our emotions contradict each other.

WHAT WORK DID POPPY PRODUCE?

The work produced over the course of this Project consists of a variation of paintings and sculpture, all playing with the use of texture and colour.
WHAT MEDIUMS DID POPPY USE AND WHY?

Maby explores various materials and textures throughout this project, using clay, acrylic paint, cardboard, and more intriguing objects such as sweets and chocolate. She explores how different textures create a change in atmosphere, and uses mixed media to portray a sense of energy.
